Assisted Stretching

Assisted Stretching

Assisted Stretching at RX Sports Massage is a targeted mobility service designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, and overall movement quality. Each session combines therapist-guided stretching with soft-tissue modalitiesselected to address individual areas of restriction, tension, or limited mobility. Depending on your needs, techniques may include PNF stretching, pin-and-stretch, oscillation, vibration, and compression techniques to help prepare the tissues for movement and enhance the overall therapeutic outcome. This integrated approach allows your therapist to work with both mobility and soft-tissue restrictions rather than relying on stretching alone. Assisted stretching can be especially beneficial for athletes, active adults, runners, cyclists, and anyone looking to improve flexibility, joint mobility, recovery, or movement efficiency. As part of the RX Correct → Maintain → Perform approach, assisted stretching can also be incorporated with therapeutic massage and corrective exercise to create a more comprehensive mobility and recovery strategy.

Frequently

Asked Questions

Appointments are recommended and generally required for all RX Sports Massage sessions. Because our practice focuses on individualized therapeutic massage—not a walk-in spa model—each appointment is reserved specifically for you and your treatment needs.
Before your session, your therapist needs time to review your information and prepare for the type of care you are seeking. Your appointment also allows adequate time for consultation, movement or range-of-motion assessment when appropriate, treatment planning, and the therapeutic session itself.

What about same-day appointments?
If you need treatment today, we may be able to accommodate you if an opening is available. Same-day and last-minute appointments are based entirely on therapist availability and are not guaranteed. We recommend checking our online booking system or contacting us directly before coming to the clinic.

Why don’t we encourage walk-ins?
Our goal is to provide focused, one-on-one care rather than simply fit you into an open table. Every appointment is scheduled for a specific amount of time so your therapist can give you their full attention without rushing your consultation or treatment.

Need help deciding what to book?
If you’re not sure which service or session length is appropriate, contact us before booking. We can help determine the best starting point based on your goals, current concerns, activity level, and what you want to accomplish through therapeutic massage.

Bottom line: You don’t need to know exactly what treatment you need before contacting us.

You simply need to know that something isn’t moving, feeling, or performing the way you want it to—we’ll help determine the appropriate starting point.
Preparing for your massage is simple. You don’t need to do anything special, but a few small steps can help you get more from your session.

1. Arrive hydrated.
Drink water throughout the day before your appointment and continue hydrating afterward. You don’t need to overdo it immediately before your session, but arriving adequately hydrated can help you feel more comfortable during treatment.

2. Avoid a large meal immediately before your appointment.
Try to finish a substantial meal about 1–2 hours before your session. A light snack is fine if you’re hungry. This can help you remain comfortable while lying on the treatment table.

3. Wear comfortable clothing.
Depending on your goals and the areas being treated, you may be asked to move through certain ranges of motion or perform simple movement assessments. Wear clothing that allows you to move comfortably.
For treatment, you will be appropriately draped at all times, and you will only uncover the specific area being treated.

4. Tell your therapist what is bothering you.
Before treatment begins, be prepared to discuss what you’re experiencing, including areas of pain or discomfort, recent injuries, changes in training, limitations in movement, or activities that make your symptoms better or worse.

The more specific you can be, the better your therapist can tailor the session to your goals.

5. Don’t worry about knowing exactly what treatment you need.
You don’t need to diagnose yourself or determine which technique should be used. Your therapist will use the information you provide, along with their assessment and clinical reasoning, to determine an appropriate approach for the session.

6. Communicate during your session.
Your feedback matters. Let your therapist know if pressure feels too light, too intense, uncomfortable, or if something doesn’t feel right. Therapeutic massage should be purposeful—not a test of how much pressure you can tolerate.

7. Avoid intense training immediately before your appointment when possible.
If your goal is recovery or addressing a specific movement limitation, arriving extremely fatigued from a hard workout may make it more difficult to assess how your body is responding. If your appointment is specifically scheduled around an athletic event or training session, however, your therapist can adjust the approach accordingly.

What should I bring?
You don’t need to bring anything special. If you’re coming in for a specific athletic or training-related concern, it can be helpful to know your recent training volume, the activity that aggravates your symptoms, and any relevant recommendations you’ve received from another healthcare professional.

Most importantly, come prepared to communicate. Your first session is an opportunity to understand what you’re experiencing and establish a treatment approach designed around your goals—not simply receive a generic massage.
Your initial sessions at RX Sports Massage are designed to do more than simply provide a massage. They are an opportunity for your therapist to understand how you move, what you’re experiencing, and what you want to accomplish through therapeutic massage.

Because every client is different, your first sessions may look different depending on your goals, symptoms, activity level, and treatment needs.

1. We’ll start with a conversation
Your session begins with a consultation. Your therapist will ask questions about what brought you in, where you’re experiencing discomfort or restriction, your daily activities, training or exercise routine, previous injuries, and what you would like to improve.

This conversation helps establish a starting point and gives your therapist a better understanding of what may be contributing to your current concern.

2. We may assess how you move
When appropriate, your therapist may perform a basic movement or range-of-motion assessment. This can help identify areas of restriction, asymmetry, compensation, or movement patterns that may be relevant to your goals.

The purpose isn’t to diagnose a medical condition. Rather, it helps your massage therapist determine where therapeutic massage may be appropriate and how to structure your session.

3. Your treatment is individualized
Your therapist will develop the session around your needs rather than following a predetermined routine.
Depending on your goals, treatment may incorporate techniques such as therapeutic massage, Swedish or deep tissue techniques, trigger point work, assisted stretching, cupping, kinesiology taping, muscle scraping/IASTM, tissue flossing, or compression therapy.

Applicable techniques and modalities are included within your session—there are no surprise add-on fees for incorporating them when appropriate.

4. We’ll communicate throughout the session
Therapeutic massage should be purposeful, not simply a test of how much pressure you can tolerate.
Your therapist will communicate with you throughout the session and encourage you to provide feedback about pressure, discomfort, movement, and how your body is responding. Your feedback helps us make appropriate adjustments during treatment.

5. We’ll reassess when appropriate
Depending on the reason you’re receiving massage, your therapist may reassess movement or range of motion after treatment.

This helps you and your therapist determine whether there has been a meaningful change and whether the treatment approach should be modified during future sessions.

6. We’ll establish a plan moving forward
Your initial sessions help establish your individualized therapeutic care plan. Depending on your goals, that may mean addressing a specific concern, improving mobility, supporting recovery, maintaining movement quality, or developing a consistent massage routine around your training and lifestyle.

Our approach follows three simple stages:
CORRECT → MAINTAIN → PERFORM

Correct: Address areas of pain, restriction, or movement limitation.

Maintain: Establish consistent care to help preserve mobility and movement quality.

Perform: Support your ability to train, work, compete, and live at your best.

What if I only want a relaxing massage?
That’s okay. Therapeutic massage doesn’t mean every session needs to be intense or focused on a problem area. Your goals determine the approach.

Our difference is that we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all massage. Every session is tailored to what your body needs and what you want to accomplish.

What should I expect after my first session?
Some people feel immediate changes in mobility, muscle tension, or overall comfort. Others may notice changes over the following day or two. Your response depends on your individual condition, activity level, treatment approach, and how your body responds to the work.
Your therapist will provide appropriate recommendations for recovery and future care based on your individual session.

Your first appointment isn’t just about getting a massage. It’s about establishing a starting point, understanding your movement, and creating a treatment strategy that supports your goals.
At RX Sports Massage, our sessions are designed around your goals, the areas being treated, and the amount of time needed to provide meaningful therapeutic care. We offer 45-, 60-, and 90-minute sessions, and the appropriate session length can depend on more than simply how much massage you want.
Our standard session options include:

  • 45-Minute Session — Best suited for focused treatment of one specific area. If an additional modality is being incorporated, the session will generally be limited to one specific modality, such as tissue flossing, cupping, or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM/muscle scraping).
  • 60-Minute Session — A versatile option for focused therapeutic work, a recovery-based full-body massage, or addressing approximately two to three areas when using deeper or more targeted techniques. When incorporating additional modalities, we generally focus on one primary area to allow enough time for proper tissue preparation, treatment, and reassessment.
  • 90-Minute Session — Provides additional time for a more comprehensive therapeutic approach. Depending on the treatment goal, we may address approximately two to three areas when incorporating multiple modalities, or three to four areas for deeper therapeutic massage without extensive modality use.

Why does session length matter?
Therapeutic massage is not simply about how many areas we can treat during a session. The quality and sequence of treatment matter.

When we use additional modalities such as:
  • Tissue flossing
  • Cupping therapy
  • Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM)
  • Muscle scraping
the tissue needs to be appropriately warmed up and prepared before the modality is applied. This preparation helps us use the technique appropriately and supports better therapeutic outcomes.

Trying to incorporate too many areas or modalities into a shorter appointment can mean rushing the treatment process. That’s not how we practice at RX Sports Massage.

Our priority is to provide purposeful treatment while maintaining appropriate tissue preparation, treatment time, and client safety.

What does this look like during a session?
The number of areas we can effectively address depends on the type of massage and techniques being used.

Recovery-Based Massage
A recovery-focused 60-minute session may allow us to provide a full-body massage when the goal is general recovery, relaxation, circulation, and reducing overall muscular tension.

A 90-minute recovery session gives us additional time to spend more attention on specific areas while still providing broader recovery work.

Deep Tissue or Focused Therapeutic Massage
For a 60-minute session, we can typically address approximately two to three areas, depending on the complexity and treatment requirements.

A 90-minute session generally allows us to address approximately three to four areas, giving the therapist more time to work progressively rather than rushing through multiple regions.

Hybrid Therapy
Hybrid therapy combines massage with additional therapeutic modalities. Because these techniques require appropriate tissue preparation, the number of areas we can effectively address is more limited.
As a general guideline:
  • 45 minutes: One focused area and typically one modality
  • 60 minutes: Approximately one primary area when incorporating additional modalities
  • 90 minutes: Approximately two to three areas when incorporating multiple modalities
These are guidelines rather than rigid rules. Your therapist will determine the most appropriate approach based on your presentation, goals, tissue response, and the techniques being used.
Why don’t we simply treat more areas?
Because more treatment does not necessarily mean better treatment.
Attempting to cover too many areas or introduce too many modalities without adequate preparation can compromise the quality of the session and potentially contribute to an undesirable response afterward.

At RX Sports Massage, we would rather treat fewer areas properly than rush through several areas simply to say we treated them.

Your therapist considers tissue preparation, treatment intensity, modality selection, recovery time, and your individual response when determining what can reasonably be accomplished within your appointment.

Which session length should I choose?
If you’re a first-time client or you’re addressing a specific concern, 60 or 90 minutes is generally the best place to start.

45-minute session is best when you have a very specific area or objective.

60-minute session provides enough time for focused therapeutic work, deep tissue massage, or a recovery-based full-body massage.

90-minute session is ideal when you need more comprehensive treatment, multiple areas addressed, additional time for therapeutic techniques, or a combination of massage and modalities.
If you’re unsure which session length is appropriate, don’t worry about choosing the perfect appointment. We can help determine the appropriate starting point based on your goals and what you want to accomplish.
The goal isn’t to do more. It’s to do what is appropriate.
Every RX Sports Massage session is designed around better movement, appropriate treatment, and your individual goals.
That means your therapist may intentionally limit the number of areas or modalities used during a session—not because there isn’t more we could do, but because effective therapeutic care requires the right amount of preparation, treatment, and recovery.
We believe in treating with purpose, not simply filling the clock.
Absolutely. If you have a preferred therapist, you are welcome to request them when booking your appointment.

At RX Sports Massage, we understand that finding a therapist you trust and feel comfortable working with is an important part of your care. Your therapist gets to know your movement patterns, treatment history, preferences, and goals over time, which can help create consistency from one session to the next.

What if my preferred therapist isn’t available?
If your preferred therapist isn’t available for the date or time you need, you can choose to:
  • Schedule with your preferred therapist at their next available appointment.
  • Select another RX Sports Massage therapist if you need care sooner.
  • Contact us and we’ll help determine the best available option.
All RX Sports Massage therapists follow the same therapeutic approach, professional standards, and client-centered philosophy, so you can expect consistent quality of care regardless of which therapist provides your session.

Can I switch therapists?
Of course. Your treatment should feel comfortable and appropriate for your goals. If you would like to work with a different therapist at any point, simply let us know. We are happy to help you find the right fit.

Our goal is simple: to make sure you receive the care that best supports your movement, recovery, and performance.
Massage therapy is generally considered safe when it is appropriately performed by a qualified massage therapist and the treatment is matched to the individual’s needs. At RX Sports Massage, client safety is an important part of every session.

Therapeutic massage is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Before beginning care, your therapist will ask questions about your current concerns, relevant health history, medications, recent injuries, surgeries, activity level, and other factors that may affect how treatment should be performed.

Can massage ever be uncomfortable?
Some therapeutic techniques may create temporary tenderness, pressure, or mild discomfort, particularly when working with areas of increased muscular tension or restriction. However, pain is not the goal of therapeutic massage.

Your therapist will communicate with you throughout the session and adjust pressure, technique, positioning, or treatment intensity based on your response.

You should never feel that you have to “push through” significant pain during a massage.
Are there times when massage should be modified or avoided?
Yes. Certain conditions, injuries, medications, or circumstances may require treatment to be modified, postponed, or avoided altogether.

For example, additional caution may be appropriate following a recent injury or surgery, with certain acute conditions, unexplained symptoms, skin conditions, or other situations where massage may not be appropriate.

If your therapist identifies something that falls outside the appropriate scope of massage therapy, we may recommend that you consult with your physician or another qualified healthcare professional before treatment.

What about using additional modalities?
RX Sports Massage may incorporate modalities such as:
  • Cupping therapy
  • Tissue flossing
  • Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM)
  • Muscle scraping
  • Kinesiology taping
  • Assisted stretching
  • Compression therapy
These techniques are not automatically appropriate for every client or every session.
We consider tissue condition, treatment area, treatment goals, and your individual response before incorporating an additional modality. Proper tissue preparation is particularly important when using more targeted techniques. We will not add a modality simply because it is available.

Will my therapist diagnose my condition?
No. Massage therapists do not diagnose medical conditions or replace the care provided by physicians, physical therapists, or other licensed healthcare professionals.
Our role is to provide massage therapy within our professional scope and to recognize situations where additional evaluation or care may be appropriate.

Your safety comes first
At RX Sports Massage, effective treatment isn’t measured by how aggressive the massage is or how many techniques we can use during one appointment.
Our goal is to provide the appropriate treatment, at the appropriate intensity, for the appropriate amount of time.

That may mean modifying a technique, limiting the number of areas treated, choosing not to use a particular modality, or recommending that you seek additional medical evaluation.
Good therapeutic massage should have a purpose—and your safety is always part of that purpose.
RX Sports Massage is a private-pay therapeutic massage practice and does not directly bill health insurance companies.

However, we do accept HSA and FSA payment cards for eligible therapeutic massage services. Because HSA/FSA eligibility is based on IRS rules and the specific requirements of your benefits plan, not every massage service or wellness expense will necessarily qualify.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for massage therapy?
Yes, when the massage therapy qualifies as a medical expense under applicable HSA/FSA rules and your plan requirements.
Therapeutic massage may qualify when it is used to treat, manage, or alleviate a diagnosed medical condition or specific health-related concern, rather than being provided solely for general relaxation, wellness, or personal enjoyment.

Depending on your circumstances and plan requirements, a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a physician or other qualified healthcare provider may be required.

What may be eligible for HSA/FSA reimbursement?
When properly documented and when your individual plan permits it, HSA/FSA funds may be used for therapeutic massage intended to address a qualifying medical condition or therapeutic need.

Examples may include massage therapy directed toward:
  • Treatment or management of a specific musculoskeletal condition
  • Pain associated with a diagnosed condition
  • Recovery related to a medical condition or injury
  • Restoration or maintenance of function when medically necessary
  • Therapeutic treatment prescribed or recommended by a qualified healthcare provider
The key consideration is medical necessity—not simply the type of massage technique being used.
For example, a therapeutic massage session may incorporate techniques such as deep tissue massage, trigger point work, cupping, assisted stretching, tissue flossing, or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization when clinically appropriate. The use of a particular technique does not, by itself, determine whether the expense is HSA/FSA eligible.

What typically is not eligible?
HSA/FSA funds generally cannot be used for services that are primarily for general health, relaxation, recreation, or personal wellness rather than treatment of a qualifying medical condition.
Examples may include:
  • Massage received solely for relaxation
  • General wellness or stress reduction without a qualifying medical purpose
  • Spa-style or recreational massage
  • Massage received solely for personal enjoyment
  • Services that do not meet applicable IRS or plan requirements
  • Expenses that your specific HSA/FSA administrator excludes
Important: The eligibility of a particular expense depends on current IRS rules and the terms of your individual HSA/FSA plan. RX Sports Massage does not determine whether your plan will reimburse a particular service.

What is a Letter of Medical Necessity?
A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is documentation from a qualified healthcare provider stating that a particular treatment or service is medically necessary for the treatment or management of a specific condition.
If your HSA/FSA administrator requires an LMN for therapeutic massage, you may need to obtain one from your physician or other qualified healthcare provider before using your benefits for the service.

An LMN does not automatically guarantee reimbursement. Your HSA/FSA administrator ultimately determines whether an expense meets your plan’s requirements.

Do you accept HSA and FSA cards?
Yes. RX Sports Massage accepts HSA and FSA payment cards for eligible services.
However, accepting an HSA/FSA card does not guarantee that your plan will consider the transaction an eligible expense. If you are unsure, we recommend contacting your HSA/FSA administrator before your appointment and asking whether therapeutic massage for your specific condition is an eligible expense and whether an LMN is required.

What if my HSA/FSA administrator asks for documentation?
We can provide appropriate documentation for services received at RX Sports Massage. Depending on your plan’s requirements, this may include a receipt or other information documenting the service.
If your administrator requires a Letter of Medical Necessity, that documentation must come from your qualified healthcare provider.

What about insurance reimbursement?
Although RX Sports Massage does not bill health insurance directly, you can contact your insurance carrier to determine whether your specific plan provides any reimbursement for massage therapy.
If your plan allows you to submit out-of-network expenses for potential reimbursement, you may request appropriate documentation from us to support your submission.

Bottom line: RX Sports Massage keeps billing simple: we are a private-pay practice, we accept HSA/FSA payment for eligible therapeutic services, and we do not directly bill health insurance. Because eligibility can vary by individual plan, we encourage you to verify your benefits before your appointment.
At RX Sports Massage, your appointment time is reserved specifically for you. Because we operate as a clinical therapeutic massage practice, keeping scheduled appointments is an important part of maintaining consistency in your care and treatment plan.

To reserve an appointment, a valid credit or debit card must be kept securely on file. A card on file is required before an appointment can be booked.

Why do we have a cancellation policy?
When you schedule an appointment, that time is reserved exclusively for you. Late cancellations and missed appointments prevent us from offering that treatment time to another client who may need care.

Consistency is also important in therapeutic care. Inconsistent attendance can lead to inconsistent results, particularly when massage is being used as part of an ongoing plan to address movement limitations, recovery, pain, or performance goals.

Our cancellation policy helps protect appointment availability for all clients while allowing our therapists to maintain a consistent treatment schedule.

What if something unexpected happens?
We understand that life happens. Emergencies and genuinely unforeseen circumstances can occur.
While our cancellation policy provides a clear standard for everyone, individual circumstances may be considered at the discretion of RX Sports Massage. Consideration is generally based on the circumstances surrounding the cancellation and the client’s appointment history.

We ask that you communicate with us as soon as you know you cannot make your appointment.

What if I need to reschedule?
If you need to change your appointment, please provide as much notice as possible. Rescheduling outside the 24-hour window will not result in a cancellation fee.
If you frequently need to change or cancel appointments at the last minute, we may need to discuss whether your current appointment schedule is appropriate for your needs.

Why is a card required to book?
A card on file is not an additional charge or membership requirement. It simply reserves your appointment and provides a payment method if the cancellation policy applies.
Your card will not be charged when you cancel or reschedule outside the applicable cancellation window.

Our approach to scheduling
At RX Sports Massage, we view your appointment as more than a spot on the calendar. It is time specifically reserved for your care.

When you consistently attend your scheduled sessions, your therapist can better monitor your progress, adjust your treatment approach, and work toward your goals.

We aren’t simply protecting appointment time—we’re protecting the consistency and quality of your care.
